The Khajuraho Group of Monuments are a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, India. They are a popular tourist destination and a World Heritage Site know for its Nagara-Style architecture and graceful sculptures of nayikas and deities, often in erotic poses, or portraying monsters. This chapter discusses possible meanings for these monsters; and in particular addresses the most specific problem posed by the vyālas at Khajuraho, as: What might be the significance of their constant propinquity to apasarases, the dancing girls of the gods?
