Shafer-Elliott et al./Hunt for Ancient Israel, 5. Shibboleth

The famous Shibboleth-Episode combines features of historical record, popular tradition, redaction history of the Deuteronomistic History and theological motifs such as justice in case of mass murder and the divine war-motif. This contribution intends to unfold these different layers of the present text in order to demonstrate the development of a section of the book of Judges that is of special significance even today.
