In 1951 Bacewicz’s String Quartet No. 4 wins first prize in the International String Quartet Composition in Liège; the following year she serves as a member of the jury for the same competition, where her winning string quartet is a set piece. Her letter from Belgium to her brother, Vytautas, in the US describes conditions for a composer in communist Poland.
