The author arrives in NYC as a musician on board the liner, the Queen Mary. This chapter recounts his impressions of the famous jazz clubs and the styles of jazz that were popular in the day and introduces the Lennie Tristano Sextent and their innovative sound. On his second trip he meets Lennie and begins to study with him. He describes the techniques he learned and also visits to Birdland, Charlie Parker and the latter's influence on Lennie.
