In a slow motion, concentrated review of these formative years, one might see them as a single, zany panopticon. And, indeed, some audiences reacted to these multi-directional sound happenings with a certain amount of irritation. In the end, however, these pieces are united by one substantial characteristic: Keith Jarrett’s will to develop his music on the spur of the moment, and not to capitulate to the mandates of a given mode that would restrict his urge to create.
