Relocating to Los Angeles, Murphy struggled for a while before being signed by Capitol Records, for whom he made three albums, including This Could be the Start of Something, the title track from which became a minor hit. He also made a number of television appearances, and endured a painful encounter with his idol, Peggy Lee. The Capitol contract came to an end without the hoped-for breakthrough, and Murphy decided to return to New York.
