Full description

Guided by my four analytical levels of the public sphere, this chapter will analyze the intellectual, social and political environment in which European scholars shaped the modern images of religion and Islam. I claim that the sociological, philosophical and orientalist discourses on religion were strongly inspired by the theological debates to which the controversial views of the Tübingen School of biblical criticism and the reception of David Friedrich Strauss’ biography of Jesus had led.
