For Hindus, Buddhists, and members of other related religions (such as Jainism), rebirth and the consequences it entails are taken as elementary components of life. The cultural distinctiveness of reincarnation should not be overstressed, though, as it is grounded in the Sanskrit term karma, which has been widely adopted in the West and which echoes the ancient and familiar stipulation of “you reap what you sow.”
