A New Politics of Agriculture
Rene Dumont was a forward-thinking French agronomist, activist and politician and one of the first public figures to use the term "sustainable development ("développement durable"). This book, based on René Dumont's ideas as contained in the 1975 publication La croissance de la famine examines the origins of hunger, malnutrition and starvation in developing countries and the causes of food shortages such as colonialism, unequal Terms of Trade, and population growth. The arguments are illustrated by several case studies discussing natural resources, power consumption, green revolution and food aid and outlines more appropriate agricultural policies involving social participation of the rural population.
