Signs certainly identifiable as hieroglyphs are first found on seals (usually known only from impressions on clay sealings) from the Old and Middle Kingdom periods of Hattusa and in smaller quantities from other sites, also of unknown provenance, c. 1650–1450 BC (Güterbock 1942; Boehmer and Güterbock 1987).
