How to Submit Proposals, Contracts, Delivery of Manuscripts, Marketing, Royalties

Thank you for considering Equinox!

Proposals for New Projects

General
Normally we require proposals that include an annotated table of contents, at least three sample chapters or a complete draft. All projects are externally peer-reviewed, usually double-blind, at least once prior to publication. Textbooks may be accepted on the basis of a thorough proposal subject to arrangements for a series of review stages during the development process.Generally, we follow the guidelines outlines in the AAUP’s Handbook of Best Practices in Peer Review. aaup-best-practices-for-peer-review

Books for a Series
If your project suits one of our series, you should communicate in the first instance with the series editor whose details can be found on the respective series pages of this website where you can also find guidelines for preparing proposals and submitting sample chapters or complete drafts for initial review. Once received, the reviews will be considered by the editor and Equinox and a decision made. If a project is contracted, the series editor will be your first point of contact for delivery of drafts/final versions of your manuscript as they will need to approve it prior to asking you to submit it to us.

Non-Series Proposals
If your project falls outside any of our series, we are still happy to consider it. Please prepare a proposal following the guidelines found in the Author Guidelines PDF downloadable from this site and send it to:

Use of AI tools Equinox does not accept text, images, graphics or translations generated directly by Artificial Intelligence, as the originality of such content cannot be guaranteed. Authors of Equinox publications must be accountable for their work, and accountability cannot be effectively applied to Artificial Intelligence. It is acceptable to use the assistance of AI-powered tools in proof-reading, formatting, the visualisation of data, and in any other way that does not call into question the author’s sole ownership of the content of the work. If Artificial Intelligence is the subject of an article or chapter, then examples of AI-generated content must be clearly marked and attributed in the text, and the express permission of Equinox secured.

Contracts

Authors whose projects have been accepted will be offered terms for a contract which may be within the parameters of series or individually negotiated.

Open Access
We do not believe that open access publishing is is sustainable or equitable, especially in the humanities. We cannot fund this option ourselves for all our books and not all our authors are at institutions that can provide such funds for long-form publication, and even if they could, we are not attracted by that publishing model. We are not a handmaiden to bureaucrats at institutions whose contracts of employment seem to imply that all academic writing is work made for hire. Therefore, if your institution categorically demands that you are only allowed to publish under terms that they stipulate (such as under a CC-BY license with no restraints on reuse or re-purposing), then we respectively ask you to note our position on this matter so that we can try to work out a solution.

Points to Note in Preparing Final Mss
Edited Books
• Edited books require that each chapter stands alone, and has all the notes, references, and author bios with the chapter, including with the introductory chapter.
• author bios format is: X is job title, department at university name, university location plus any research interests or recent publications. (100 words maximum).

All books
• Please provide ALT text for all images. Alt Text, or alternative text, is meant for a screen reader to describe an image to aid people who are visually impaired. The ALT text may be different from the image caption. Max 100 words per image please.
• Chapters should be numbered (not just titles). • Equinox preference is for a short and simple TOC (detail is viewed as a function of the index).
