This chapter examines the different themes of love as expressed in the Qur’ān and the sayings of the Prophet. It outlines the scriptural origins of these themes and examines the earliest Sufi philosophies of love, all of which would later be expressed in a more developed manner in Ibn ‘Arabī’s writings.
