Full description

In this interview, Rosen speaks with London-based artist Sam Winston about his artistic practice, which emphasizes duration, experimentation and process. His previous works include Drawing Breath, in which he drew a line for every single breath he took during an uninterrupted fifteen-hour period. Here, he speaks about his recent works for the exhibition Darkness Visible, which invited audiences into a specially installed ‘dark room’ in the Southbank Centre, London in 2017–18. Drawing upon his experience creating works of art while blindfolded, and subsequently during days spent in complete darkness, the artist challenges viewers to ‘see’ darkness in new ways, disrupting traditional hierarchies of the senses, binaries of light and dark, and what it means to be a ‘viewer.’
