Full description
What English-speaking people refer to as “religion” has no equivalent term in most other cultures and languages, yet it is often assumed (and researched) as if it were truly universal. “Indigenous,” by contrast, represents a very specific qualifier grounded in particular locations and polities. Asking, then, “Were all religions at one time ‘Indigenous’?” seems an apparent contradiction in terms.
